9CSSC invited Ronda for Training on Patent Mining and Technical Disclosure Writing
On November 7, Eric Liu, a senior patent attorney of our company, was invited by China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited (hereinafter referred to as CSSC) as a guest speaker for a training on the theme of "Patent Mining and Technical Disclosure Writing". This seminar was organized by CSSC, aiming at laying a good foundation for its subsequent patent practice.
First of all, let's have a brief look at CSSC of which Chinese people are proud:
China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited (CSSC) is a mega conglomerate directly administered by the central government of China. As the mainstay of the shipbuilding industry in China, it boasts totally 60 solely owned and cross-sharing enterprises and institutions, including a batch of most powerful shipbuilding and ship-repairing companies, ship research and design institutes, ship supporting and ship foreign trade enterprises. It has a wide spectrum of products, ranging from bulk carriers, oil tankers, container ships to high-tech, high-value-added items, such as liquefied natural gas carriers (LNG carriers) and offshore engineering facilities. CSSC plays a leading position peerless in the shipbuilding circles in China and has already proved itself worthy of the title of a large-scale enterprise group with fast growth in many fields.
While keeping making itself bigger in scale and stronger in strength in marine defense equipment and marine engineering equipment industries, CSSC also works to expand and upgrade marine technology innovation and application and marine engineering services with earnest efforts to pursue comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable development, striving to become the world's leading marine technology group.
Why it is necessary to provide training on technical disclosure writing?
Technical disclosure is an important product of patent mining, and comes with documents prepared by inventors to clearly and completely present their invention to patent agents or patent departments of enterprises. With a record of specific description of the invention, it serves as a basis for patent departments to decide whether the invention is suitable for patent application as well as a basis for drafting patent application documents.
Sorting technical features and drafting technical disclosures is of crucial importance for inventors to re-examine their innovation in accordance with requirements of relevant patent issues. Inventors are adept at research and development of related technologies, but they may find it very challenging to perfectly and accurately accomplish patent application and patent portfolio planning no matter how familiar they are with the application work. Therefore, it is necessary to train inventors on how to summarize and refine their inventions and innovations in a systematic and well-structured way according to the formality requirements for technical disclosure.
Technical disclosure can be regarded as a bridge between the inventor and patent attorneys or patent engineers, which can speed up the latter's understanding and grasp of innovation content and its contribution and reduce times of communication with the inventor. In this way, a patent application document with complete technical content and appropriate scope of claims can be prepared in a relatively short time, so the achievements of technological innovation can be protected to the maximum extent.
In recent years, CSSC has invited a lot of experts from the field to give training for its technicians so as to improve their awareness of intellectual property protection, standardization, and declaration of results. Great progress has been made. In the past three years, 477 patent applications have been completed by only one branch of Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, including 207 invention patents. It has successively been rated as "Advanced Organization for IP Promotion", "Advanced Organization for IP Work in 2018", and "Organization with Number One Growth Rate of Invention Patent Applications in 2018", etc.. Besides these, it also won 1 gold patent award and 2 outstanding awards of IP Alliance, organized and participated in the compilation of 5 international standards, issued 14 national standards/ industry standards, conducted research and development of 26 projects, compiled 141 enterprise standards as well as won 33 awards in various categories regarding scientific and technological progress.
With the transformation and upgrade of economic structure and the deepening of corporate innovation and development, IPR protection and competition have become the key to enterprises' survival and development. It is necessary for them to increase IP protection on one hand, and on the other hand, they need to actively develop independent IPR so as to increase core competitiveness with IP laws serving as a booster for its own growth.
